Question by daztheblue: Japanese cakes have a strange pill in a plastic packet with the words do not eat?
A friend bought me a box of 6 small cakes from his recent trip to Japan. On opening we found the cakes but also a small purple pill encased in plastic with a tear line, presumably where you open it. The strange thing is on the plastic it says ‘do not eat’. What is it and why is it there? Have we won a prize??
Hmmm, interesting – thanks for the explanations but they don’t really add up.
Firstly there was also a separate pack of silica gel, secondly the pill was encased in the plastic. Moisture wouldn’t be able to get to the pill.
Any more ideas? It’s doing our heads in?

it is called a desiccant

it contains an agent that absorbs moisture keeping the rest of the stuff in the box from spoiling as soon

The average human breathes 23,000 times every day and pulls 435 cu ft of air into their lungs. What are we inhaling into our lungs?

Dust, dirt, pet dander, pollen, mold spores, tobacco smoke. Did you know that 42,000 dust mites can live on only 1 ounce of dust and that 40 lbs. of dust is generated each year for every 1,500 sq ft of living space?
Odors from tobacco smoke, pets, cooking, perfumes, cleaning solvents are the cause of many allergies, asthma attacks and chronic headaches.
Microbials (bacteria, viruses, influenza). Two major sources for contracting a cold or the flu are the air we breathe and the things we touch. Well, it’s that time of year again. Expect a 30% rise in absenteeism and a 40% reduction in productivity in schools and at work this winter.
Mold and mildew in air ducts, crawl spaces and inside walls can cause severe allergic reactions in some individuals.

We are spending almost 90% of our time indoors. Unfortunately, the individuals who are most at-risk for airborne illnesses and respiratory tract infections often spend the most time indoors; infants, the elderly, those with heart and lung disease, people with asthma and those afflicted with a compromised immune system or severe respiratory distress syndrome (SARS). Microorganisms, pathogens and bacteria don’t have to be contained in the droplets of a sneeze to infect you. They adhere to any sort of particle floating in the air, to be inhaled or they can be transferred by touching a contaminated surface and then transmitted through the sinuses. Infectious diseases can be spread quickly in an enclosed environment.

So, how can we eliminate these bad actors? The solutions offered by traditional air heating and cooling equipment manufacturers may be able to address 1 or 2 of these problems, but not all 4. The traditional approach that has been used for decades is mechanical filtration; what is called a “passive” technology. The equipment is in a fixed location and you have to pull all the air through the filter or device to clean it. If air doesn’t make it through the device, it doesn’t get treated. And, even HEPA-type filters can not filter out sub-micron microscopic particles. It can’t eliminate odors and ultraviolet light probes are ineffective at killing microbials.

EcoQuest Radiant Catalytic Ionization (RCI) Technology, on the other hand, is an “active” process that replicates processes that occur outside in Nature inside. Sunlight, ionization and oxidation keep the air clean outside. This proprietary process reaches every corner of your house or business and treats the air where it is; like tiny little scrubbers going out to effectively clean the air. We don’t have to pull all the air through our systems to effectively treat it. This is an advanced oxidation process that cleans the air; it doesn’t filter it. This technology is an affordable space-age solution to the problem of indoor air pollution. It is a more effective, safe, and affordable electronic alternative to the traditional concepts that use mechanical filters. This same technology is being used right now in the WTC Ground Zero Museum in NYC to keep the air clean for visitors and was used to help clean up the Pentagon after 9/11. Our technology is the same as that used to treat the air inside the space shuttle and is “Space Certified” by the Space Foundation.

RCI technology is one of the most tested and documented in the industry. It has been proven to work. Tests conducted by Kansas State University and University of Cincinnati have shown a 99.9% kill rate on some of the more common and deadly microbials on hard surfaces and technical papers have been published for peer review. This technology has been successfully used for years in occupied, food preparation and storage areas to help prevent contamination.
